Do you get an upset stomach? Do you get bloated,? Do you have stomach pain? Do you get a headache? Do you feel sluggish? Or do you simply just don’t feel well? These are signals that your body is sending you - that something is not right. 

Your body cannot process the food that you have eaten properly and it’s asking for your help to please pay attention here because something is not right. The problem is so many of us are use to taking a steroid type drug (like cortisone, hydrocortisone, or prednisone, e.g.) which reduces inflammation and the symptoms go down. 

The real issue comes when we cover up the pain instead of digging deeper and looking at what is the root cause of your pain/discomfort and inflammation.

As 2016 is coming to a close, it’s common to look back and see how well you did with your New Year’s Resolutions, you know the ones that you made on January 1st, 2016! Far too many of us start off the year with the best of intentions but generally fall off the wagon by February and as the year is coming to end we often beat ourselves up because yet again, we will have the same resolutions in 2017.  

Resolutions just don’t work, unless you have a strategy attached to help set yourself up for success. So many of us, turn to vision boards (which I personally love and create every January 1st myself), these generally work much better because we are able to see our goals every single day. We have all heard the saying energy goes where attention flows ….. and that is so true. When you focus your attention on what you want every day, somehow someway we bring these wishes into existence (most years I am always amazed at what I brought forth that I never thought would be possible).

No, not everyone goes through gluten withdrawals, only the lucky ones. The symptoms can vary from mild (like a slight headache) to severe (which could include physical and emotional turmoil). Typical symptoms include nausea, depression, lightheadedness, brain fog, headaches, low energy, bloating, constipation, dehydration, dizziness, excessive joint pain, fever, sweating and extreme craving for anything that has wheat in it.

Yes you crave anything with wheat in it and may even start seeing and smelling your favorites everywhere. Your body is screaming out for wheat and it is hugely important during this time that you DO NOT GIVE IN. Not that it is ever okay to give in but mistakes do happen, this is not the time to be making any. Wheat is very addictive and by some accounts more addictive them cocaine so it is a really hard habit to remove this.

Where is gluten hiding?

Yeah sure if you have celiac disease or are severely gluten sensitive we all know to avoid the usual suspects like bread, breadcrumbs, cakes, cookies, pastries, donuts, wheat, barley, and rye but where else does gluten hide? Where else might gluten be lurking in your food? 

Staying gluten-free is critical to your health so it is important to find the hidden places where you might be surprised to find have wheat, wheat starch and gluten added. 

1. Oats 

Yes oats in nature are gluten free however it is how and where they are grown and how they are processed that becomes the problem. Most oats are processed along with wheat and flour therefore making cross-contamination very likely. Sometimes the oats are stored in silos that are also used to store other grains. So unless they are clearly marked as Certified Gluten Free Oats meaning they were grown, processed and stored safely stay clear of them.

2. Chewing Gum 

Believe it or not some brands of gum are not even safe because they use a gluten-based powder to keep the gum from sticking to the wrapper. It is crucial to double check the ingredient list here because not all gum is created equal in a celiacs world.

Top 6 Tips for Removing Wheat from your Diet.

Removing wheat from your diet, nowadays is so much easier yet so much more confusing for someone who has real issues with gluten. Sure there are tons of options, everybody and their brother has jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon in order to make a buck.  The problem is very few companies are concerned with taking the proper steps in order to safe guard someone’s health. It’s all too easy to say oooppss we made a mistake and recall a certain product than actually make the effort ahead of time to prevent the damage to many celiac’s health. 

Gluten free has become the fat free fad of the 1980’s and it truly is causing irritable harm to true suffers of celiac disease. It has become so confusing to understand that just because a product is labeled gluten free doesn’t mean that it is safe for a celiac to eat.  So yes our grocery store shelves are literally lined with gluten free options but can a celiac really eat them? Top 5 Tips on Celiac Cheating….

I’m not sure why but this week in particular several celiacs have talked about cheating whether that be on social media or in person. One of my friends was in about shock that after all this time, that I don’t ever have cheat days. Clearly they still don’t understand what it means to have celiac disease so these conversations prompted today’s post.

So here are my best tips regarding celiac disease and cheating.

Tip #1: Don’t cheat!

This is not a diet, this is not about trying to be eat right a few days a week and then it’s okay to fall off the wagon once a week, on special occasions, or holidays. Celiac disease is a LIFELONG autoimmune disease, not a diet. Lifelong as in for the rest of your life, I/we cannot eat gluten. So there are NO cheat days EVER!!!! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Hey guys, this weeks article they present an 18 year old male with Selective IgM deficiency (sIGMD, which is quite rare found in approximately 5% of celiac disease patients) masking seronegative celiac disease (seronegative is where some celiac patients antibodies are negative). His symptoms included abdominal pain, diarrhea and weight loss which had been present for a year. Laboratory tests showed reduced IgM, DQ2-HLA and negative anti-transglutaminase. Villous atrophy and diffuse immature lymphocytes (lymphocrytes are one subset of white cells and they are the main type of cell found in lymph) were observed at histology. Tissue transglutaminase mRNA mucosal levels showed a 6-fold increase. The course of treatment was a gluten-free diet

    It’s important to understand that eating healthy and gluten free today are not necessarily the same thing. Companies have had to get creative to make their products taste better and more appealing to a larger audience since removing the gluten from their products. Unfortunately, many companies have gone the route of adding a whole lot of unnecessary chemicals, sugars and ‘other’ flavorings and fillers that barely can pass off as food, let alone healthy food.  

    Currently gluten free is hot and has become a multi-billion dollar industry much like the fat free area of the 1990’s. This leads to a tremendous amount of serious healthy problems for people who have to eat gluten free because they have celiac disease and/or people who have severe gluten sensitive. No one can truly understand what it is like putting your health on the line every time you eat something unless they truly live this (and I’ll address this discussion more on another blog post).
