Sharing my Gluten Free Kitchen and wanting to die!

Getting sick and having to go gluten free years ago was a mission and a half as we all know but I never realized just how lucky I was to have gone through that journey on my own and at my own pace. If I made a mistake, I could back track and figure out exactly why or what I ate that triggered my reaction once I gluten proofed my house.

In the beginning, it took months to really understand that just the tinniest bit of wheat that was in my shampoo (for example) was the culprit for my skin rash that was getting worse by the day. It wasn’t just about the wheat that was in the food, that was causing me harm. But, I was able to use my detective skills and finally figure it all out.

And, in truth it took a good year and a half before I finally started to feel better and some real relief but I stuck with it and every day made small but better choices for my health…

Learning to forgive our bodies!

Learning to forgive our bodies!

As someone who grew up always being overweight, I learned very early on that in order to survive the looks, comments, and being picked on in school - that I needed to develop a coping mechanism that included disconnecting from my body. I can actually remember thinking I am not my body, I am so much more than that. But unfortunately, first impressions and first looks causes everyone to form an opinion of who people thought I was. We do it every day, we judge people without even thinking about it.

In today’s society so much is based on how a person looks. We have all been trying to measure up to what the magazines, tv, movies and internet describe as beautiful. And for me, beautiful was something out there, something completely unattainable and something that I secretly strived to be.

I spent most of my life on a never-ending diet that never worked. And, truly that only caused me to push further and further away from my body and completely disconnect from the image in the mirror. And, disconnect from the pain of being a constant disappointment to myself.

Saying Goodbye to Wonder Woman……

Saying Goodbye to Wonder Woman……

For far too long I was under the crazy notion that I was Wonder Woman in disguise. I’m not sure if it is a generation thing, if its a woman thing or where I adopted it, but I was under the ridiculous notion that in order to be successful in my life I had to do it all and I had to be it all to my family and myself.

Truth be told, I fell short most days and I constant felt like I couldn’t measure up to my own ideals. The problem was I had trained everyone in my life to rely on me for everything, that when I suddenly couldn’t be there for everyone it wasn’t only my world that came to a screeching halt so did everyone else’s world.

Will the Rotation Diet Work For Me?

Will the Rotation Diet Work For Me?

A rotation diet is typically used for people who have multiple food allergies. So doctors suggest that the person rotate their food every four days. So lets say for example you would eat gluten on Monday, you would typically wait four days, so on Friday you would eat gluten again and see if your body reacts to this food.

Here’s the problem with gluten. If you are having a reaction to gluten today, your body will always react to gluten. This is a permanent sensitivity. The challenge becomes when you body does not respond the way it did last time you eat gluten and it decides to find another vehicle and see if you will pay attention to a different signal of pain.

Why Am I Still Having A Reaction?

Why Am I Still Having A Reaction?

The ugly and unfortunate answer to this is, there gluten is hiding somewhere in the foods that you are eating or it is what you are putting on your body.

It is important to remember that just because a food is labeled gluten-free that doesn’t mean that it is good for you. And it also doesn’t mean that it is totally free of gluten. There are trace amounts of gluten in all processed food, some definitely have more than others.

The quantity of gluten in a particular product is expressed as parts per million or ppm. According to the the United States in order for an item to be labeled “gluten free” it can have up to 20 ppm. Some products have much less than 20 ppm’s and some have up to the 20 ppm.

Getting Comfortable First…

Getting Comfortable First…

So you have celiac disease or are gluten sensitive and suddenly everyone arounds you treats you differently, why is that? Why does what is going on in my body have an effect on everyone else? The truth is, it will change your relationships quite a bit because you will no longer be able to do the things you have always done, things that you did today before you found out what was going on inside of you.

As you learn to navigate the world of gluten out of sheer necessity, you will be forced to make choices and decisions that you will now approach differently and you will change. In truth change scares people. People who are close to you sometimes become threatened because they are afraid they may have the same issue, they are afraid family dinners/get-togethers/holidays will never be the same, they are afraid you no longer will be the you who you they know and love.

Shifting your Priorities…

Shifting your Priorities…

Being successful when you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity is all really a matter of shifting your priorities which is easier said then done. Sometimes we shift priorities out of absolute necessity and this is one of those times because truly you can no longer live the way you did, yesterday.

What was important yesterday when your health is suddenly forced into the forefront may not seem as important today and that is completely normal and honestly the way it has to be.

If you have celiac disease and you begin to go through withdrawals, that will absolutely force you to narrow down your lists of essentials to get through today and some days even those won’t happen. If you are gluten sensitive your body can react in similar ways and you can go through withdrawals as well. I truly believe anyone who doesn’t go through some kind of gluten withdrawals in the beginning is at a serious disadvantage than those of us who do. The worse your withdrawals are the better. Why?
