Gluten Free Diet is not enough!!!

For so many people who suffer from celiac disease (and really any autoimmune disease) where gluten has become poison to your body, everything changes. The way that you look at food, the way that you shop, the way that you cook, the way that you interact with friends and family, and for some of us who we are.

Who we are because celiac disease robs us of our spontaneity.  In many cases celiac disease changes us and we are always on guard. It’s really hard for a celiac to truly relax and enjoy ourself. Plans becomes a challenge because we never know how we will feel in advance. Which only leads to anxiety and prayer that when the day comes we will be able to follow through and not disappoint others as well as ourself.

Disappoint your friends and family enough leads them to question your relationship. Disappoint yourself enough and you lose faith in you, because when you stop following through on your commitments and promises, even though with everything in your heart you wish you could be there, enjoying the moment, it chips away at who you are.

I came across this quote again the other day: 

and I have to say with 2017 just beginning and so many of us are setting our intentions for the new year, this quote kinda stopped me in my tracks. 

Why do we know more about what is lacking in us, than what is fabulous about us?

Is it because we are all so use to being judged and judging ourselves so harshly that we fail to see the beauty of who we are and who we are becoming? 

Or is it because we are constantly told that we don’t measure up with our looks, our bodies, our smarts, our health, and our life?

Or maybe it's because we all feel inadequate and like a fraud in some way?

What are your non-negotiables for 2017?

As 2016 is coming to a close, it’s common to look back and see how well you did with your New Year’s Resolutions, you know the ones that you made on January 1st, 2016! Far too many of us start off the year with the best of intentions but generally fall off the wagon by February and as the year is coming to end we often beat ourselves up because yet again, we will have the same resolutions in 2017.  

Resolutions just don’t work, unless you have a strategy attached to help set yourself up for success. So many of us, turn to vision boards (which I personally love and create every January 1st myself), these generally work much better because we are able to see our goals every single day. We have all heard the saying energy goes where attention flows ….. and that is so true. When you focus your attention on what you want every day, somehow someway we bring these wishes into existence (most years I am always amazed at what I brought forth that I never thought would be possible).

What does self-care look like to you?

I have to say that after recently being glutened for the first time in a long time, I had forgotten just how long it takes my body to bounce back. 

I realize what happens to one celiac does not necessarily happen for the other. No two of us look the same or react the same, ever. And, aside from that making us extremely difficult to diagnosis it also makes connecting the dots to all of our issues that much harder to get a complete picture of our health.

When you live with celiac disease or really any autoimmune disease removing gluten from all areas of your kitchen, pantry, cleaning products, medicine and even cosmetics will eventually come into play. Removing gluten from your food is really just the first step and the more you dig into your disease you will come to realize that gluten truly is everywhere. It is added to so many things that most would never even think of. Now I realize that there are several different points of views on this and everyone is entitled to their opinions but for me if comes down to three really key studies that led me to clean up more than just my food. 

First, it only takes 1/1000 of a gram of gluten (that’s equivalent to one crumb) to get into your system, to set off and trigger an immune system response in your body for the next three months. And that’s how much damage one crumb can do so truly understanding that gluten can be hiding in any of my products that I would digest is the first step to trigging a constant reaction in my immune system.

Learning to forgive our bodies!

As someone who grew up always being overweight, I learned very early on that in order to survive the looks, comments, and being picked on in school - that I needed to develop a coping mechanism that included disconnecting from my body. I can actually remember thinking I am not my body, I am so much more than that. But unfortunately, first impressions and first looks causes everyone to form an opinion of who people thought I was. We do it every day, we judge people without even thinking about it.

In today’s society so much is based on how a person looks. We have all been trying to measure up to what the magazines, tv, movies and internet describe as beautiful. And for me, beautiful was something out there, something completely unattainable and something that I secretly strived to be.

I spent most of my life on a never-ending diet that never worked. And, truly that only caused me to push further and further away from my body and completely disconnect from the image in the mirror. And, disconnect from the pain of being a constant disappointment to myself.

But you don't look sick......

Most days as a celiac I struggle through, I push myself to get up, get dressed, do my makeup and hair, get working, and doing my best for my family yet I feel like the walking dead. I am barely surviving and some days I just can’t keep pushing my body and I have to cancel appointments, meetings, get togethers no matter how much I was looking forward to this because my body and my health is screaming for my attention. When I ignore it, it has a nasty way of making me stop and listen. Sometimes it’s in the form of excessive exhaustion, migraines, horrible joint pain, bathroom issues and that’s just the beginning.

Did you know that if you have one autoimmune disease you have a 25% chance of getting a second autoimmune disease. And, according to Dr. Gerald Mullin from Johns Hopkins, he said that statistically somebody with an autoimmune disease they are at risk for a total of 7 autoimmune diseases in his or her lifetime. Why is that? Why would that be?
