Do you get an upset stomach? Do you get bloated,? Do you have stomach pain? Do you get a headache? Do you feel sluggish? Or do you simply just don’t feel well? These are signals that your body is sending you - that something is not right. 

Your body cannot process the food that you have eaten properly and it’s asking for your help to please pay attention here because something is not right. The problem is so many of us are use to taking a steroid type drug (like cortisone, hydrocortisone, or prednisone, e.g.) which reduces inflammation and the symptoms go down.

When you live with celiac disease or really any autoimmune disease removing gluten from all areas of your kitchen, pantry, cleaning products, medicine and even cosmetics will eventually come into play. Removing gluten from your food is really just the first step and the more you dig into your disease you will come to realize that gluten truly is everywhere. It is added to so many things that most would never even think of. Now I realize that there are several different points of views on this and everyone is entitled to their opinions but for me if comes down to three really key studies that led me to clean up more than just my food.

Most days as a celiac I struggle through, I push myself to get up, get dressed, do my makeup and hair, get working, and doing my best for my family yet I feel like the walking dead. I am barely surviving and some days I just can’t keep pushing my body and I have to cancel appointments, meetings, get togethers no matter how much I was looking forward to this because my body and my health is screaming for my attention. When I ignore it, it has a nasty way of making me stop and listen. Sometimes it’s in the form of excessive exhaustion, migraines, horrible joint pain, bathroom issues and that’s just the beginning.

Did you know that if you have one autoimmune disease you have a 25% chance of getting a second autoimmune disease. And, according to Dr. Gerald Mullin from Johns Hopkins, he said that statistically somebody with an autoimmune disease they are at risk for a total of 7 autoimmune diseases in his or her lifetime. Hey guys, I’m sure you have heard the term microbiome by now as well as genome and sure the microbiome has to do with human microbes genes and genome with our human genes but what does that really mean to us as a regular person who is not a scientist or doctor?

The best definition as well as simplest definition that I have found comes from learn.genetics.utah.edu which states “Some use “microbiome” to mean all the microbes in a community. We and others use it to mean the full collection of genes of all the microbes in a community. The human microbiome (all of our microbes’ genes) can be considered a counterpart to the human genome (all of our genes). The genes in our microbiome outnumber the genes in our genome by about 100 to 1. Microbes are everywhere: in the soil, in the water, and even in our bodies. That's right! Microbes cover every surface of our bodies, both inside and out. These microscopic life forms represent thousands of species, and they outnumber our own cells by about 10 to 1. A few microbes cause disease, but most do not. In fact, many are essential for good health.”

Top 5 Tips on Celiac Cheating….

I’m not sure why but this week in particular several celiacs have talked about cheating whether that be on social media or in person. One of my friends was in about shock that after all this time, that I don’t ever have cheat days. Clearly they still don’t understand what it means to have celiac disease so these conversations prompted today’s post.

So here are my best tips regarding celiac disease and cheating.

Tip #1: Don’t cheat!

This is not a diet, this is not about trying to be eat right a few days a week and then it’s okay to fall off the wagon once a week, on special occasions, or holidays. Celiac disease is a LIFELONG autoimmune disease, not a diet. Lifelong as in for the rest of your life, I/we cannot eat gluten. So there are NO cheat days EVER!!!! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
